Great president attacked by the right wing

Clinton was excellent on policy issues. He helped the US gain global respect, now largely squandered. He led an economic boom, and he should get some credit for it since he created good conditions (balanced the budget, kept the country at peace, encouraged trade) and his administration managed potential economic pitfals (mexican currency collapse, ruble collapse, run on Asian markets) with great skill.

Clinton did not have good control over his personal life, he is not alone for that in terms of Presidents, but the reason an indiscretion was revealed to the public was that Clinton was investigated by a Republicn congress fro 6 out of 8 years of his presidency. First, they were investigating land deals in Arkansas long before he took office, then a problem with White House travel files, then the suicide of a lawywer in the white house. Also of the so-called reasons to prosecute were found baseless. Finally the investigation moved to his personal involvement with a White House intern, Clearly, Clinton did not handle this situation correctly - but you would have never gotten to that kind of scrutiny if not for the tens of millions of dollars investigating him for things that were totally pointless.

So he had oral sex. Nobody died, and we were all happier.

The rejection of Bill Clinton because he had an extra-marital affair shows just how stupid Americans can be. A man whose policy and actions were nearly always beneficial to the most of us, despite the pandering, Clinton towers like a giant over the current gang of thieves and scoundrels occupying Washington. Bill Clinton my have lied about his affair with Monica Lewinsky, but the only thing the US lost because of it was the ability for him to continue doing good things for the country. The US should be more like the French: expect these guys to have mistresses and look the other way.

One of the most powerful, persuasive, and influential presidents of all
time. A person who will probably be remembered as the JFK of his
generation (hey, it's the best we got). "Camelot" in the 1990s was as
close as this generation saw to a peaceful, happy time, as the economy
exploded and everyone rallied around either Mr. Clinton or Kenneth
Starr trying to crucify him.
Things that seem silly in retrospect.

yes, the left was lost with clinton (though mondale and dukakis
certainly deserve a lion's share), but his race to the middle was a
necessary evil given how much the political climate had changed from
our parent's generation. his work ethic was unparalleled, and his
intellectual energy untouchable. you never worried if clinton knew all
the facts or not. i disagree with a lot of the concessions he made, but
i'm sure he does too. politics is an ugly ugly game, and clinton played
it like a master.
